"Losing his speech": Home Alone star's major health update

Home Alone star Ken Hudson Campbell's daughter has shared a health update for fans after the actor underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his mouth.

Speaking to People Magazine, Michaela revealed that her father is "doing well" after his 10-hour surgery last week, but there are still a few challenges their family will have to face, as Campbell will need to have radiation treatment five times a week.

"I think the hardest part of this is going to be him losing his speech and his ability to talk. So speech therapy is going to play a big role in it," she told the publication.

"We're kind of playing it one step at a time, depending on how debilitated he is.

"If he needs extra help, we might put him into a nursing home for a little while, but if not, we're going to take him back home and we still will be hiring post-op care help with that."

This comes after Michaela and her family managed to raise $102,000 USD ($AU 152,000) for their father's treatment through crowd-funding, after the actor lost his SAG-AFTRA health insurance in January last year.

Campbell, who played Santa Claus in Home Alone, "burst into tears" when he saw the messages and well wishes on the crowd-funding page.

He was diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma - or oral cancer, on October 27.

His family are hoping for a full recovery for the actor who they described as "a loving father of two children with an admirable lust for life, and a passion for acting, writing, & sports."

Images: Instagram

Naomi Watts opens up on the tragic loss of her father

Renowned British-Australian actress Naomi Watts, now 54, recently opened up about the profound loss she experienced at the tender age of seven when her father, Peter Watts, passed away, apparently due to a heroin overdose.

In a heartfelt and candid interview with Tatler magazine for the upcoming November issue, Watts delved into her childhood and family, revealing the deep sadness that enveloped her after her father's untimely death.

Peter Watts, who was a sound engineer for the iconic band Pink Floyd, tragically passed away at the young age of 31. Naomi Watts confessed that her recollections of her father are meagre, as there are scarcely any photographs or tangible memories to cling to.

She revealed, "Even sadder, there's no real photos or anything."

Occasionally, when stumbling upon a new photograph, she experiences moments of recognition, allowing her to glimpse into the past, triggering faint recollections of the times they shared.

At the age of 14, Naomi, along with her brother Ben, embarked on a life-changing journey when her mother, Myfanwy, affectionately known as Miv, made the decision to relocate from the United Kingdom to Australia. This move followed the divorce of her parents when Naomi was just four years old, marking another significant chapter in her tumultuous upbringing.

Watts disclosed that her acting career often explores themes of identity and grief, struggles she has grappled with throughout her own life. She reflected, "Those are two big things in my life that I've struggled with – identity, I think, because of moving around all the time. And then the grief thing, obviously, my father."

In addition to sharing her personal journey, Watts also shed light on her enduring friendship with Nicole Kidman, with whom she attended high school in Sydney. She fondly recalled Kidman's early accomplishments as a source of inspiration, saying, "She was always an inspiration. The fact that she had done the amount of work she'd done was like, 'Oh yeah, another North Shore girl has achieved this, so maybe there's a chance [for me].'"

Naomi Watts previously discussed the loss of her father in a 2021 interview with Vogue magazine, revealing that she still grapples with the tragedy decades later. She conveyed, "Having grown up losing my dad at a very early age, I think that's a story I know well; it's still sorting itself out at the ripe age of 52."

Despite the hardships she has faced, Watts remains one of Australia's most successful Hollywood stars. Her resilience and ability to navigate profound personal challenges have only added depth to her remarkable journey in the world of entertainment.

Image: Instagram

“I was spiralling”: Naomi Watts’ candid menopause admission

Naomi Watts has spoken candidly about how her life drastically changed when she started going through early menopause at the age of 36.

The Aussie actress, now 54, said going through such a big change at such a young age “wasn’t easy”, and found it difficult to access information about what she was going through, both physically and mentally.

Speaking candidly to Hello magazine, she said, “Going through menopause at such a young age was not easy, especially during a time when there was so little information available about it.”

“Mood swings, night sweats, and migraines … I was feeling like I was spiralling out of control,” she added.

According to the Mayo Clinic, menopause typically occurs at the age of 50, when a woman experiences her last period.

Despite the change coming on much earlier than anticipated, Watts said learning to cope with the hormonal changes helped her feel more liberated.

“Going through this journey led me to a deeper understanding of myself, and I came out on the other side feeling more authentically me,” she told Page Six.

“A lot of freedom came in the self-acknowledgment.”

She continued, “I had those voices in the back of my mind reminding me how old women are let out to pasture, but there was a lure to this desire to be authentic, to crawl from behind the invisible wall and just acknowledge for myself something that everyone could have probably guessed.”

Watts’ personal experience led her to partner with Menopause Mandate, a non-profit organisation that aims to revolutionise midlife support available for American women.

“I truly believe that if menopause hadn’t been such an off-limits topic when I first started experiencing symptoms, I would’ve had an easier transition,” she said.

“I was part of a cycle that desperately needed to be broken.”

Top 10 collagen boosting foods

We all know how good collagen is for keeping our skin firm. Chances are good your day or night cream probably contain it as an ingredient and if you have regular facials, it’s most likely integrated into the treatment somehow. While our body is constantly creating new collagen, the rate at which this happens starts to slow right down as we get older. Fortunately, along with your topical products, certain foods can help naturally boost collagen in the skin.

Here’s what to include on your plate to give your dermis a boost:

Fish – Packed with Omega-3, quality fish helps create stronger cells, which in turn support the structure of the skin.

Red fruit and veggies – Veggies like chilli, capsicum and beetroot and fruits like tomato contain lycopene, an antioxidant that acts as a natural sunblock, helping protect skin from UV rays while also boosting collagen.

Dark green veggies – Rich in vitamin C and high in antioxidants, veggies like kale, spinach and darker varieties of lettuce can help increase collagen production.

Orange veggies – Chowing down on carrots and sweet potato gives your body a hit of vitamin A, which restores and regenerates damaged collagen.

Berries – Low in sugar and delicious to boot, berries contain antioxidants which help eliminate free radicals and increase collagen levels.

Soy products – Whether it’s soy milk, cheese, yoghurt or even tofu, soy contains a hormone called genistein which helps boost collagen production and block enzymes that cause ageing.

White and green herbal teas – Sipping a cup of herbal tea can help support the structure of the skin and prevent collagen breakdown.

Citrus – Fruits like orange, lime and lemon not only contain high levels of vitamin C but they also have the ability to help convert amino acids to collagen.

Eggs – Protein rich foods in general are high in collagen, which can help boost the levels in your skin. Lean meat and nuts are also great for creating a healthy complexion.

Garlic – Not only useful for warding off cold and flu, garlic provides the body with sulfur that is necessary for collagen production.

Surprising items to never take into the kitchen

Keeping your kitchen clean may seem like a never ending task at times, what with constant food preparation and other crumb and mess producing activities taking place all day long. There’s a difference however between a “messy” kitchen and a “dirty” kitchen with the latter providing a breeding ground for nasty germs and harmful bacteria. Here’s what to ban now for a cleaner, healthier kitchen space in a snap.

1. Sponges – You’ve probably heard it before but the kitchen sponge is a breeding ground for bacteria. Keep yours spick and span with a weekly soak and wash in bleach followed by a dry in the sun and chuck them out once they start to show signs of wear and tear.

2. Shabby re-usable grocery bags – If your reusable grocery bags are starting to show their age, it may be time to replace them. Your bags can harbour plenty of bacteria from the loads of groceries you use them for. A quick wash and dry can help solve the problem and prolong the life span of your bags.

3. Your mobile – Your mobile phone is crawling with germs. Taking it into the kitchen while cooking is a sure fire way to transfer the yuckiness to your food. Try and keep your device out of the kitchen or if you need it for cooking, set it somewhere away from the food and wipe your hands and device down with an antibacterial wipe after you’ve finished cooking.

4. Pet food – While keeping your dog or cat food in the house can help prevent outdoor pest problems, the kitchen isn’t the place for food bowls. If their food sits out for a longer period of time it can attract indoor pests and create a less than appealing smell. Try moving your feeding station to the laundry for a more sanitary solution.

5. Your handbag – Similar to your mobile, your handbag is literally covered in grime. Think about where you take it on a daily basis! Keep it out of the kitchen when and where possible.

Related links:

10 clever tips to keep produce fresher, longer

8 things you didn’t know about Tupperware

10 foods you shouldn’t store in fridge

David Campbell opens up about his “big life moment” with Tina Turner

Today Extra host David Campbell has opened up about a special bond between himself, rocker Jimmy Barnes, and Tina Turner’s Private Dancer album.

He made the reveal as he was discussing the legendary singer’s passing, noting that his father - Jimmy Barnes - loved seeing Tina performing at the NRL, while viewing footage of the day with his fellow hosts. She had been singing the hit song ‘Simply the Best’, a track that Barnes had dueted with her.

“Doing that moment with Tina for the NRL, the follow-up to that one, was just one of his great life moments,” Campbell explained. He went on to share that his father had paid tribute to her earlier in the day - shortly after news had broken that Turner had passed away at home in Switzerland at 83 - and that he didn’t want to speak too much on that.

“I’m so sad to hear that Tina Turner has left us,” Barnes had written on social media, sharing a picture of himself recording with the late Turner, and several others. “It was such an honour to work with someone so talented, strong and giving. It was certainly a highlight of my career to have sung and shared the stage with such a wonderful human being.”

From there, Campbell went on to share that his father often told a story on his Working Class Man tour, in which Barnes was just 16 years old and trying to make his way with little money to his name in Adelaide - until Tina and Ike came to town.

“He and some friends broke into the show,” Campbell said, “and got down front to watch her. And he said it was the most magic moment.

“He was obsessed with her.”

Campbell’s story wasn’t done there, however, with the TV personality then recalling how he’d come to Sydney at the age of 10 to meet his father.

“The first thing he played me was Private Dancer,” he revealed. “He really adored her. It was a big life moment for him.”

Next up came a conversation about the impact ‘Simply the Best’ had had on sport, particularly the NRL, and how he couldn’t imagine a song “more closely aligned to a song”.

But for many Australians, of course, the true cultural impact of Turner’s work stems from the ‘Nutbush’, and its captivating power at events in venues all across the country.

Images: Today Extra / Nine

5 make-up mistakes making you look tired

When applied correctly, a good make-up job can be a Godsend – taking you from tired and washed-out to invigorated and glowing. Unfortunately, it can work the other way as well with incorrect application making you look even more exhausted than you actually are! Fortunately it’s easy to avoid these make-you-look-tired traps. Here are the five common mistakes many women make (and how to avoid them).

1. Overdoing the powder – Dull skin is synonymous with tired skin and an overly powdered complexion often emphasises that. Try skipping the matte foundation and powder combo and try either an illuminating liquid foundation or even a BB cream or tinted moisturiser which will highlight instead of camouflaging.

2. Going beige – Skipping colour on your face may seem the best way to detract attention away from a tired complexion but by embracing beige, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. A completely neutral face looks lacklustre and a little bit flat. Try adding some definition and pop with a darker toned lippie or rosy hued blush to lift your face and add some colour.

3. Using the wrong concealer – Concealer is there to conceal. Unfortunately, the wrong shade can actually highlight that which you’re trying to cover. Try a creamy formula no more than one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. And always try out your shade in natural light as artificial light can disguise the true match.

4. Layering on the liner – While a smoky eye may be a classic look, if you’re looking less than fresh, it can come across as harsh and unflattering. Try skipping the black and grey shades in favour of navy or even dark brown, as they’ll help lift your eyes and add definition without darkness.

5. Forgetting to curl – Curling your lashes is one of the best ways to open up your whole eye area and help you look awake and alert. Unfortunately, it’s often the first thing we forget to do when tired. Try curling your lashes first, before applying the rest of your makeup and if you really want to amp up the result, use a heated eyelash curler.

Images: Getty

8 nifty uses for leftover glass jars

If your recycling bin is building up with leftover jars, scoop them out and salvage them. There are so many uses for leftover jars that you never need crowd out the rubbish again.

Here are our eight favourites:

Vase – Leftover glass jars, especially long narrow ones (like the ones tomato passata come in) are ideal for small flower arrangements. Wild flowers or natives look especially good in these vintage inspired vessels.

Candle-holder – Forget expensive candle holders. Small glass jars are excellent for holding your tea-lights. Try different shapes and sizes grouped together for an eye-catching effect.

Hold-all – Need somewhere to store your pens/pencils or even the bits and bobs that make up your sewing kit? Try using a large glass jar. Added bonus? You can see everything you’ve stashed.

Drinking glass – If you’ve been to a trendy café recently, you may have had your drink served in a glass jar. It’s the new ‘in thing’ to do. Why not create the same vibe at home and serve your drinks in your leftover jars? Smoothies especially are great in jars. You can even cap them with the lid for drinks on the go.

Related link: Make your own polka-dot drinking glasses

Planter – If you’re a keen gardener, especially one with a small space to green up, you’re no doubt always on the lookout for planters. Larger sized glass jars can make a beautifully eye-catching display for small plants with succulents.

Storage container – If your jar still has a tightly fitted lid, why not use it to store other foods? Homemade foods like pesto and nut butters are especially good stored in air-tight glass containers while large jars make the perfect biscuit tin.

Gift – Bear with us! While handing over an empty glass jar probably isn’t the best idea, filling a pretty jar with some homemade goodies makes for an excellent gift. The dry ingredients for biscuits, a favourite slice or even something like homemade tea or dried herbs and spices can all be placed in a jar festooned with some ribbon and a card.

Related links:

A guide to homemade candles

Great uses for Mason jars

How to create your own flower arrangements

David Campbell’s picture perfect blast from the past

When Trevor Long stopped by the Today show, David Campbell promised it to be “the best thing that’s ever happened on this show.”

And while David himself may have had a few things to say afterwards - with his past mullet being exposed to the world - Trevor certainly had a lot to offer viewers, outlining a whole host of options for turning their old photographs into digital keepsakes.

“If you’re like me,” David began, “and I still have a lot of my old photos … I don’t trust clouds, I miss photos … and they’re all stored in our phones and it freaks me out.”

“Photos like this one, David?” Trevor asked, an old photo of David and his school friends - John and Glen - on display in his hands.

“That freaks everyone else out,” was David’s immediate response.

The image saw the three at what appeared to be a formal event, two of them even sporting waistcoats, but it was David’s remarkable haircut that caught their attention, and their amusement.

“That is a mullet, ladies and gentlemen,” Trevor declared, to Today co-host Sylvia Jeffreys’ laughter.

From there, Sylvia went on to explain that their goal was to “keep photos like that alive because we should never forget that mullet.”

And that’s where Trevor came in, noting that he had many photo albums at home, and that “you kind of think that you’re going to lose those memories.”

The solution, he believes, is in taking them to the digital sphere, where they can be kept ‘forever’.

First on his list of digitising options was an application called Google Photo Scan. He went on to demonstrate how all users need to do is “point the phone at the photo”, wait for the flash which they may find “a bit weird”, and for dots to appear “on each corner”.

Using David’s mullet throwback as his example, he waited for the picture to scan, and then revealed the results: a near-perfect replica on his phone that was “now Facebook shareable” and “also just something you can keep in your digital library”.

Next up was the most efficient - and most expensive at over $600 - of Trevor’s solutions, with Epson’s Fastfoto scanner. The photos were inserted in bulk into the machine, and deposited at the other end in rapid succession after enhancing and saving the images to his computer - quite unlike a scanner, though similar in process, where each photo must be manually attended to throughout the entire job. According to Trevor, the Epson device had the potential to do “a hundred a minute”.

Last but not least came the answer for those with an awful lot of old film negatives lying around. The Kodak Slide ‘n’ Scan, he demonstrated, required users to slide film through the device, with each image appearing on a small screen at the front. After pressing the button on top just once, the picture would be saved onto a memory card, ready to be moved wherever its owner desired.

“It’s a little bit of a manual process,” Trevor allowed, “but as you push it through [and] press the button, it saves it on a memory card, kind of like the memory card you have on your digital camera. Put it into your computer, and again, you choose what you do with your photos.”

And for those worried about the cost of some of the products he’d showcased? Trevor’s answer was simple: sell them.

From there there was only one concern left to address, as David was showing his mullet pic to the camera, with Trevor asking “can you grow that back?”

David, laughing, shot back, “I wish I could!”

Images: Nine

“The guy's a flop”: Kyle’s feud with David Campbell erupts

Kyle Sandilands’ feud with Today Extra’s David Campbell has been well documented over the years, though it’s doubtful that many had ‘a blow up over a fake marriage scandal’ on their 2023 bingo list.

David Campbell has recently come under fire for comments he made during an interview with Married at First Sight’s Jesse Bumford. David probed Jesse about his role in the cheating scandal between his ‘wife’ and another of the show’s grooms, and went so far as to suggest Jesse was partially responsible for the infidelity.

Kyle, like many viewers across Australia, believed David’s take left a lot to be desired. But Kyle, who has not been shy about his feelings for David in the past, wasn’t content to leave it at that.

While chatting to KIIS FM co-host Jackie O on their show, Kyle declared David to be a “flop” who “never has anyone’s back”. He confessed to his surprise at David’s approach to the interview, having decided that MAFS groom Jesse seemed like a “nice bloke” with the public behind him. Kyle then suggested that David had immediately sided with Jesse’s ‘wife’, Claire, to appeal to the “woke” crowd.

Jackie O seemed to share Kyle’s sentiments, agreeing that David had behaved like a “smug d**”.

“That's what David Campbell is like,” Kyle vented. “David Campbell reads a headline somewhere, believes it to be 100 per cent true, does no research, and forms a very stupid and immature opinion because that's what that type of person does.

“Then [he] runs around trying to protect everyone with no real details. The guy's a flop. I've never liked him.”

He then admitted that while he likes David’s Today Extra co-host Sylvia Jeffreys, he can’t stomach watching the show because David makes him “physically sick to look at.”

“This is his way of pumping himself up so he's a woke hero,” he surmised, “and no one likes that.”

Brookyln Ross, newsreader for KIIS FM, suggested that David - who should be aware of MAFS' heavy editing and early filming dates - had no excuse for his actions. Jackie O followed up on the thought, wondering if David had even bothered watching past the first few episodes of the show.

“I feel like he has seen the first episodes but has not watched the recent ones,” she mused. “He thought he was doing what the public wanted by attacking Jesse, and not realising, ‘dude, this isn't the way to go’.”

“He's out of date,” Kyle stated. “This is what David Campbell does. This guy doesn't actually have his own opinion. He always does what he thinks people would like, but he really has zero personality.”

Images: Getty

Royal biographer hints at Queen's cause of death

A royal expert claims Queen Elizabeth II was suffering from a “relatively painless” but “invariably fatal” condition before announcing her death 90 minutes before Buckingham Palace.

In a video uploaded to YouTube at 5pm local time (2am AEST), controversial royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell claimed the Queen had passed away at 2.37pm (11.37pm AEST).

Buckingham Palace announced the monarch’s passing 90 minutes later, at around 6.30pm UK time.

Her announcement came at the end of a lengthy clip where the royal expert spoke about a condition the Queen was allegedly suffering from.

Lady Campbell, who is most well-known for her books about Princess Diana and the Queen Mother, claimed that Her Majesty was suffering from a serious bone condition, though she wouldn’t reveal “the word that accurately conveys her diagnosis” out of respect for her “dignity and privacy”.

“If she wants to reveal that word, or her advisors wish to reveal it, that is up to them. I don’t think one needs to use the word to get across the point that I think most people will be able to pick up, that this is a really serious situation,” Lady Campbell said in the video, prior to announcing the monarch’s passing.

“The condition has been induced, in part, according to people who know her well, has been created by the tremendous stress to which she has been subjected over the last three years.”

The Palace has not confirmed the Queen’s cause of death.

“Can you imagine an older woman, as her life is winding down, and she is hoping to enjoy the last few years of her life in good health being bombarded by the tremendous abuse to which she and the monarchy have been subjected,” Lady Campbell said.

She went on to say she had tried to warn people that the Queen was “far more ill than they thought she was” over the past few months.

“I have on several occasions in the last few weeks, if not months, made the point that she had been affected to her bones. I used that repeatedly to get across the point that what she was suffering from was a malady of the bones,” she continued.

“There are two maladies of the bones, one is more painful than the other. Fortunately the Queen’s malady, although it falls in the same category and condition of the more painful one, has been the less painful one.

“It has been restrictive, and I will not go into the medical treatments she has been receiving. I have previously indicated that her bruising was due to cannulas and I have left it at that.”

After the video cuts away, Lady Campell continued filming, claiming she had found out about the Queen’s passing.

“Having just made this video it is with great sadness that I have to inform you that events have yet again overtaken one’s plans, and I am reliably informed that the Queen died at 14.37pm this afternoon,” she said.

“And that the reason why the announcement has not been made so far is that they are waiting for Harry and Meghan to arrive at Balmoral, after which the announcement will be made.”

Buckingham Palace went on to announce the news of Her Majesty’s passing before Harry arrived at Balmoral, while Meghan remained in London.

“I think we should be very grateful for having had such a wonderful monarch,” Lady Campbell continued.

“And I think we can be also grateful for the fact that her death was relatively painless. Bone cancer is not fun.

“But she was fortunate enough to have the lesser of the forms of bone cancer, and she kept her spirits and her vitality to practically the end.

“And now, I would say, my sympathies to all her loved ones, all her family, and really, all her subjects many of whom love her.”

However, the Courier Mail reported that medical experts said frailty and “geriatric syndrome” - a term describing a group of common health conditions older people experience that don’t fit in distinct disease categories - could have been contributors to her passing.

Her symptoms reportedly met five of seven criteria used by Britain’s NHS to classify people as frail, including being over 85, having ongoing health conditions, requiring regular help, being forced to cancel activities and using a walking stick.

In the hours before her death, a statement from Buckingham Palace said doctors were “concerned” for the Queen’s health and that she was “comfortable” at Balmoral.

Images: Getty Images / Lady Colin Campbell (YouTube)

“I didn’t know how to ask for help”: Naomi Watts shares important message on ageing

Naomi Watts got candid about the topic of menopause and how the word used to “freak her out” in a bid to normalise conversations about this aspect of every woman’s life.

The 53-year-old took to Instagram to tackle the topic, which she describes as “a natural phase in life”, sharing her own experience and revealing that it began earlier than she expected.

“When I was in my late 30s, I was finally ready to start thinking about creating a family. Then the M word swiftly blew my doors down, it felt like a head-on collision with a Mack truck.🚚💥,” she began.

“How could I figure this out when no one was talking? I was earlier to it than my peers. My mentors and mum didn’t seem up for discussing it, I didn’t know how to ask for help and they didn’t know how to provide… even doctors had little to say.

“It’s oddly like an unwritten code of silence: women should suck it up and cope, because that’s how generations past have done it.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Naomi Watts (@naomiwatts)

Watts then called for more representation of women “in this phase of life” and age group in the media.

“We’ve been under-served in media, stories and marketing for far too long”, she continued.

“Particularly since 1 billion people worldwide will be menopausal by 2025…

“When you spotlight uncomfortable conversations, they get easier.
